Meet Keri
Keri Brion’s commitment to Thoroughbred racing began at a young age, working at Sylmar Farm in Pennsylvania. This foundation was formalized when she joined Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard's operation, where she spent years evolving from a stable hand to his trusted assistant, gaining comprehensive experience in managing a top-level dual-purpose stable. During this time, Keri also established a riding career as a jockey, competing on the flat and over hurdles on the National Steeplechase Association (NSA) circuit.
Her years in the saddle provided her with an intimate, hands-on understanding of horse conditioning and race strategy. Upon Sheppard’s retirement, Keri went out on her own. Her inaugural season immediately marked her as a major force on the American circuit, building upon the foundational knowledge and expertise gained over a decade.
Keri operates as a powerful dual-purpose stable, dedicated to achieving excellence in both steeplechase and flat racing. Keri's background as a jockey heavily influences her training philosophy, allowing her to approach each horse as an individual with a deep understanding of performance under tack.
Her objective is to maintain top-tier success in the jumps division while expanding her presence and winners on the flat tracks, particularly across the Mid-Atlantic and New York circuits. She is committed to sourcing new talent, domestically and internationally, to support her versatile operation. Keri’s long-term ambition is to secure a lasting legacy of versatility in the sport by achieving success in both jumps and flat racing.
Keri’s Accomplishments
Triple Crown Steeplechase Success
Keri trained the brilliant mare The Mean Queen to win the 2021 Eclipse Award for champion steeplechaser. This mare's campaign included three consecutive Grade 1 victories, culminating in the American Grand National. Keri achieved this historic feat in her very first season after opening her own public stable.
A Million Dollar Trainer
In 2022, Brion became only the second trainer in the history of the National Steeplechase Association (NSA) to exceed $1 million in earnings in a single season. This milestone cemented her status among the elite in the jumps division.
Historic International Wins
Keri made history in 2021 when she became the first American trainer to win both a National Hunt flat race (bumper) and a hurdle race in Ireland. This rare accomplishment demonstrated her ability to succeed on the demanding European jump racing circuit.
